What Is Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation, also called breast enlargement, is a surgical procedure performed to enhance the size and symmetry of the breasts using breast implants. Breast augmentation can improve a person's fullness and figure, boosting their self-image and self-confidence.

How Is Breast Augmentation Performed?
At our Birmingham, AL office, we utilize the latest techniques and technologies to provide unparalleled results. Our patients' comfort and safety always come first. Breast augmentation is performed using a form of sedation, generally intravenous (IV) sedation or general anesthesia. A range of incision methods could be used, depending on the type and size of the implant, patient body type, and our surgeons' preference. Given our vast experience, we have significant expertise with all approaches and offer them all. We are the only practice in Birmingham and all of Alabama offering all the approaches. All approaches necessitate an incision around an inch long somewhere on the body.
Incision methods include:
Inframammary Incision: An incision of a little over an inch is placed in the crease of the breast (also known as the inframammary fold or IMF). This tends to be the most commonly chosen by patients across the US, as it allows for direct access to the most complicated issues. The scar resulting from this technique typically fades very nicely. This option can be used below the muscle with saline or silicone implants or above the muscle with silicone implants.
NAC or Periareolar Incision: This is performed by placing a small incision around the lower part of the areolar complex. Since there typically is a color difference between the areolar complex and the breast skin, the scars tend to hide nicely. This technique can be performed using saline or silicone implants above or below the muscle.
Transaxillary Incision: An incision is made in the armpit, keeping the breasts scar-free. A channel is created from the armpit to the breasts, allowing for the insertion of saline breast implants, which are then positioned behind the breast.
Transumbilical Breast Augmentation Incision (TUBA): This technique uses a small incision at the upper rim of the belly button, leaving a nearly invisible scar. The implants are then tunneled beneath the skin to the breast tissue. Leaving all scars away from the breast. It is only available for saline implants. This can and is performed below the muscle using a technique we developed.
Transabdominoplasty Breast Augmentation (TABA): If the patient is undergoing an abdominoplasty at the same time as their breast augmentation, this may be another option. This technique allows for the placement of saline implants below the muscle via the incision made for the tummy tuck. This option prevents the need for an additional incision/scar.
Breast Augmentation Using the Patient's Own Fat: Fat transfer to the breast is another popular option for enhancing the breast. This is performed by harvesting fat from other areas of the body and placing it into the breast based on the treatment plan decided during the consultation.

What Is the Rice Test?
One of the hardest things for a patient is determining what size they would like to be. This typically is a joint decision between the doctor and the patient. We offer sizers to try on in our office, but there are also some things patients can do at home to help with this. The rice test is a way to get an idea of how an individual might look with breast implants of various sizes prior to their consultation. With bags of rice worn inside a sports bra, the rice test allows a person to quickly "try on" different sizes and become educated about fill volume measurements in cubic centimeters (cc's). Just had breast augmentation yesterday and am already in love. Dr. Hedden was very patient with my questions and concerns and all of his staff are wonderful. The anesthesiologist was great and I was in and out with no memory of anything except sitting on the surgery table. Highly recommend.
Dr. Joshua Halka is an amazing surgeon. I went in knowing what I wanted and Dr. Halka delivered. He gave me exactly what I was hoping for. I went in for a breast augmentation and showed him a picture of exactly what I wanted and he made it happen. I've never felt more myself than I do now thanks to him and his wonderful team. Every question I asked was answered. I live out of state and the whole process was so easy and fluid. The only think I didn't like was the wait to get it done (waiting for my surgery date to get here). Lol but that's on me for waiting so long. I look the best I ever have in my life. I went from an A cup to a D cup and they are stunning. I feel more womanly than I ever have in my life and the confidence has sky rocketed. Thank you for everything Dr. Halka!
