What Is Scar Revision?
Scars develop as a result of an injury or disruption to the skin's surface. Scars can be big, wide, bumpy, dark, raised, or recessed and lead to an unsightly appearance. Scar revision can be performed to improve the appearance of a scar so it blends in more naturally with the surrounding skin tone and texture. How Is Scar Revision Performed?
Treatment for scar revision may vary based on the type and degree of scarring. Treatments range from topical treatments to minimally invasive procedures and surgical revision. Additionally, a combination of procedures may be used.
Topical treatment: Gel, tapes, or external compressions can help close and heal a wound, as well as reduce irregular skin pigmentation. They can also help treat existing surface scars.
Injectable treatment: For a concave scar, a dermal filler could be used to add volume back into the area. Results typically last from 3 months – 1 year, depending on the type of filler used.
Surface treatment: Surface treatments are the most common type of treatment offered for scarring. Using dermabrasion, laser (or light) therapy, chemical peels, or skin bleaching, we can adjust the top layer of the skin to reduce scarring and promote healthy tissue growth.
Surgical treatment: For deep scars, surgery may be the only option for removal. In this event, one of the below closure methods may be used:
- Layered closure: When scar removal extends below the surface of the skin, layered closure may be needed, in which the skin will be closed layer by layer until the surface wound is closed.
- Flap closure: A W-plasty or Z-plasty technique may be used, and the scar may be repositioned to create a more camouflaged appearance and more flexibility.
- Tissue substitutes: If there is not enough healthy tissue to close a scar, pharmaceutical tissue may be used. This is most common in scarring due to burns.
- Tissue expansion: In lieu of a skin graft, tissue expansion may be used. This process includes placing a tissue expander under the skin. The expander is slowly filled with a solution that will help expand the healthy skin, which can be used to replace the scarring.

I had a pain free recovery - Scheduled my consult with Dr. Fontana at Hedden & Gunn in Birmingham, Alabama because she took the time to call me and talk through my concerns. I had previously committed to a different surgeon but wasn't 100% confident that he was the surgeon for me. After talking with Dr. Fontana I moved my surgery to Hedden & Gunn. She performed a breast lift, breast implants, Labiaplasty, fat grafting to the labia majoras and a TCA peel under my eyes while I was under general anesthesia. I had a pain free recovery. Some swelling and tightness, which was expected, but no pain. I feel like Dr. Fontana's skills are so good that she did my surgeries so well that it has allowed me to heal fast and feel good the entire time. She is super sweet and patient also. Choose Dr. Hedden! B to DDD cup, type 1 diabetic, 600cc, silicone submuscular - Dr. Hedden did a wonderful job on my breast augmentation I could not be happier with the results. I healed very well after surgery even with being a type 1 diabetic. They look and feel so natural now and it has only been 6 months. I nit pick them sometimes because my shape is off a little bit on one of them and they hang a little more than I’d like but that would require a lift and it’s so small and honestly I feel like they look more natural anyway so I’ll wait a while before I consider a lift and increasing the size. I wish I’d have gone with 800cc because boob greed is a real thing lol but I’m glad I got the 600 because bras are hard to find in a 38E lol but compared to what I started with I’d say I have a 95% improvement and I love the way all my clothes fit now! My scars have healed nicely and are barely even visible and can’t even be seen at all when I’m standing up. I still have some numbness but I’m a type 1 diabetic so I assume mine just take longer to fully heal but I have enough sensation back that I’m not too worried about it. Dr. Hedden did an amazing job and I’m happy I listened to everything he suggested. When I started this journey I was so afraid because what if I spent all this money and it didn’t turn out good. Excellent Surgeon; Excellent Results - Dr. Halka did an outstanding job replacing my 15-year-old saline breast implants. I researched extensively before selecting a surgeon. I was dealing with one of the 15-year-old implants having suddenly ruptured and deflated. I was concerned that this might cause complications and less-than-ideal results with the replacement; therefore, I wanted an exceptionally-skilled surgeon. I considered surgeons in Huntsville, Nashville, and Birmingham. After my consultation with Dr. Halka, I was confident that he was the right choice.
