Surgical Excision in Birmingham, AL

Surgical excision is a medical procedure used to remove abnormal or diseased tissue, such as tumors or cancerous growths, through a surgical incision. During this procedure, one of our plastic surgeons at Hedden & Gunn Plastic Surgery will carefully cut away the targeted tissue along with a margin of healthy tissue to ensure complete removal and minimize the risk of recurrence. For more information on the evaluation and treatment for abnormal growths or skin cancers, contact our Birmingham, AL office to schedule a consultation.

Before starting a surgical excision, we'll administer anesthesia to ensure patient comfort. For smaller, easy-to-remove melanomas, a local anesthetic will be utilized. If a melanoma is bigger and in a harder-to-reach area, general anesthesia may be deemed necessary. Prior to surgery, a member of our team will thoroughly disinfect the area to be treated and administer anesthesia. The cancer will then be excised with a scalpel using horizontal incisions made around the lesion and surrounding tissue. An electrode can be utilized to carry out a feathering process, which can smooth the edges around the wound. This will help to get rid of extra cells from the lesion and minimize any chances of scarring. Minor excisions can be sutured together, while bigger excisions may need a skin graft to close up the wound. Once we're finished, we'll sterilize and bandage the wound to prevent infection. At this point, we'll review aftercare instructions to ensure a smoother recovery. After this, patients are free to leave our Birmingham, AL office and get back to their regular activities.

At Hedden & Gunn Plastic Surgery, we take a thorough approach to surgical excision, gently clearing away cancerous cells and some of the surrounding tissues to ensure all of the cancer is removed. Some key benefits of surgical excision at our Birmingham, AL facility are:

I am so grateful and dazzled by Dr Halka’s skill and care! (Don’t let the low prices lead you to doubt this fabulous surgery, spa, or doctors.) I love having my body back, and how closely Doctor Joshua Halka and his staff have continued to look after me, months after my surgery!

Dr. Gunn is awesome to say the least! He done my breast implants and I’m so happy I chose him to do them. After the surgery, I took a short nap then got up, went shopping and to a movie with my husband. Dr. Gunn was very thorough and answered any and every question I had! The nurses are all so nice, knowledgeable, and helpful also. The anesthesiologist was great and talked me through the whole process. Thank you for such an amazing experience!

10/10 recommend Dr Halka and his staff! I researched other local plastic surgeons before making my decision. I loved the reviews I read & before & after results from Dr. Halka. My experience has been amazing throughout the whole process from the consultation to post op. I had abdominoplasty & breast augmentation done on 5/21. My results are even better than I expected, I couldn’t be more thrilled! I finally have my confidence back after having 2 children. Dr Halka is very knowledgeable, kind & compassionate. He answered all of my questions with ease. I would highly recommend him to my friends and colleagues. If you’re considering taking the next step, schedule a consultation. You will be in great hands! Thank you Dr. Halka!

Just had breast augmentation yesterday and am already in love. Dr. Hedden was very patient with my questions and concerns and all of his staff are wonderful. The anesthesiologist was great and I was in and out with no memory of anything except sitting on the surgery table. Highly recommend.

Skin cancer is one of the most treatable forms of cancer, but it's crucial to seek a diagnosis and treatment as early as possible any time a new or unusual growth is noticed on the skin. The earlier treatment is started, the better the odds of survival. In many cases, surgical excision can remove all the cancer before it spreads to surrounding body parts and skin. Excision also allows for cells to receive further testing which could confirm whether all of the cancer was removed. Schedule an appointment at Hedden & Gunn Plastic Surgery in Birmingham, AL to learn more about options for skin cancer treatment.
