Buttock Lift in Birmingham AL
Remove Excess Tissue from the Buttocks
Sagging of the buttocks due to poor tissue elasticity can be caused by aging, pregnancy, significant weight loss and heredity. Dieting and exercise can only go so far in addressing this condition, which may persist despite our best efforts.
A Buttock Lift, or gluteal lift, surgically removes excess skin and fat from the buttocks, while improving the shape and tone of the underlying tissue. Buttock lifts in Birmingham, Alabama can help you achieve your goal of seeing smoother, firmer and more pleasing lower body contours with long-lasting results.
Buttock lifts are sometimes included as part of a lower body lift at Hedden & Gunn Plastic Surgery. This procedure can give your body a more comprehensive improvement and a more well-balanced shape by removing sagging skin and fat from the abdomen, hips, thighs and buttocks.
Buttock Lift Candidates
In general, buttock lift candidates include:
- People with significant soft tissue looseness in the gluteal area.
- Nonsmokers who are healthy and without medical conditions that impair healing or increase surgical risks.
- People who are committed to leading a healthy lifestyle with proper nutrition and fitness.
- People with a positive outlook and realistic goals for what a gluteal lift can accomplish.
Buttock lifts are not intended to add volume to the buttocks. Patients who desire a perkier rear end with more fullness, roundness and projection may consider the Brazilian butt lift or buttock implants.

Buttock Lift Procedure
The choices for anesthesia administered during your buttock lift include intravenous sedation and general anesthesia. Your doctor will recommend the best choice for you.
Buttock lifts may require extensive incisions. The length and pattern of the incisions depend on the amount and location of excess skin to be removed. Advanced techniques usually allow incisions to be placed in strategic locations where they can be hidden by most types of clothing and swimsuits.
One common gluteal lift technique of uses an incision just below the waist line combined with an abdominoplasty incision. Liposuction may be used for improved contouring.
Another technique uses an incision just below the buttocks, placed in the crease between the buttocks and the upper thigh. The excess skin and tissue is then removed, resulting in a more defined crease. This procedure sometimes smooths the skin of the back of the upper leg.
Deep sutures within underlying tissues help to form and support the newly shaped contours. Sutures, skin adhesives, tapes or clips may be used to close the skin incisions.
Buttock Lift Recovery
After your buttock lift procedure, dressings/bandages will be applied to the incisions. Small, thin tubes may be temporarily placed under the skin to drain any excess blood or fluid that collects. You will be taken into the recovery area to be closely monitored and may be permitted to go home after a few hours.
You will be instructed to wear a support garment around-the-clock following your buttock lift. Your surgeon will tell you how long you need to wear the garment and if there are any other garments you may have to wear during your recovery.
Your plastic surgeon will give you specific instructions on how to care for yourself after surgery. Following these instructions is essential to the success of your buttock lift. The instructions may include:
- How to care for your surgical site(s) following surgery.
- Medications to apply or take orally to aid healing.
- Specific concerns to look for at the surgical site(s) or in your general health.
- How to care for your drains.
- When to follow-up with your plastic surgeon.
Seek medical attention immediately if you experience shortness of breath, chest pains or unusual heartbeats after going home. You may require hospitalization and additional treatment if any of these complications occur.
The surgical incisions should not be subjected to excessive force, motion, swelling or abrasion during the time of healing.
Buttock Lift Results
The results of a butt lift are visible almost immediately. However, it will take some time for the final results to fully develop. Satisfaction with your new image should continue to grow as you recover from surgery.
The tissues will settle a little within the first 3 to 6 months, and scarring can take up to 2 years to fade to its mature level. Some visible scars will remain, but the overall results are long-lasting provided you maintain a stable weight and general fitness. As your body ages, it is natural to lose some firmness. However, most of your initial improvement should remain.
Although good results are expected from your buttock lift, there is no guarantee. In some situations, it may not be possible to achieve optimal results with a single surgical procedure and another surgery may be necessary.
